  4. This file contains important notes for all users of IBM AntiVirus,
  5. including a summary of highlights in this release and last-minute
  6. changes to the printed documentation.  It is divided into these

  25. ------------

  27. IBM AntiVirus is a comprehensive anti-virus product for all popular PC
  28. operating systems.  It is designed to detect and remove viruses from
  29. your computer simply and reliably.  It is the software that IBM uses
  30. to protect its own computers.
  31.  
  32. IBM AntiVirus Desktop Edition includes support for DOS, Windows[1],
  33. OS/2[2], Windows 95, and Windows NT, plus the IBM AntiVirus Emergency
  34. Diskette.  IBM AntiVirus Enterprise Edition includes all of these,
  35. plus support for NetWare[3] and additional applications for
  36. administering IBM AntiVirus in shared computing environments.
  37.  
  38. For complete information about IBM AntiVirus, refer to the User's
  39. Guide or to the online help.  The section titled "Version 3.0
  40. Highlights" below in this file contains a list of features that are
  41. new in this version.
  42.

  48. Highlights of Version 3.0
  49. -------------------------
  50.  
  51. The following improvements have been incorporated into version 3.0
  52. of IBM AntiVirus for all platforms:
  53.  
  54. * Many more new viruses are now handled, including ShareFun, CAP,
  55.   and variants of Wazzu and Laroux for Microsoft Office 97.
  56.  
  57. * IBM AntiVirus now handles macro viruses in objects that are stored
  58.   inside other objects, such as Word documents embedded within Excel
  59.   spreadsheets.
  60.  
  61. * IBM AntiVirus Desktop Edition now includes protection for Windows NT
  62.   workstations.  It provides both automatic virus shielding and
  63.   scheduled virus scanning, whether or not you are logged on.
  64.   Administrator privilege is needed to install or uninstall IBM
  65.   AntiVirus for Windows NT.
  66.  
  67. * IBM AntiVirus Desktop Edition is now distributed on a single 
  68.   compact disc (CD-ROM).  If you need to install IBM AntiVirus on a 
  69.   system without a CD-ROM drive, you can create installation diskettes
  70.   for it on any system which does have a CD-ROM drive, or you can 
  71.   obtain installation diskettes directly from IBM.
  72.  
  73. * A printable version of the User's Guide is included on the 
  74.   IBM AntiVirus Desktop Edition CD-ROM.  The \300\DOCUMENT\AVUGEA.PS
  75.   file contains a PostScript level 1 document formatted for 8.5 inch
  76.   by 11 inch paper.
  77.  
  78. The following improvements have been incorporated into version 3.0
  79. of IBM AntiVirus for Windows, Windows 95, and Windows NT:
  80.  
  81. * The system shield now detects viruses in attachments to Lotus Notes[4]
  82.   documents when the "Launch", "View", or "Detach" buttons are clicked.
  83.  
  84. * A problem was corrected which interfered with virus detection on 
  85.   network drives in certain circumstances.
  86.  
  87. The following improvement has been incorporated into version 3.0
  88. of IBM AntiVirus for OS/2:
  89.  
  90. * The IBM AntiVirus Standalone program has been renamed IBMAVSP2.EXE.
  91.  
  92. The following improvement has been incorporated into version 3.0
  93. of IBM AntiVirus for Windows 95 and Windows NT:
  94.  
  95. * An icon in the system tray indicates that IBM AntiVirus is
  96.   protecting your system.  The icon animates during scheduled scans,
  97.   flashes when the system shield is checking, and provides a convenient
  98.   pop-up menu for configuring IBM AntiVirus.
  99.  
  100. The following improvements have been incorporated into version 3.0
  101. of IBM AntiVirus for DOS and Windows:
  102.  
  103. * The new /NOTSR option of the installation program can be used to 
  104.   conserve conventional DOS memory on workstations that never run 
  105.   DOS without Windows.
  106.  
  107. * New virus filter technology further reduces conventional DOS 
  108.   memory usage during scheduled and manual scans.
  109.  
  110.  
  111. Additions to the User's Guide
  112. -----------------------------
  113.  
  114. The following information was not included in the User's Guide:
  115.  
  116. * On Windows NT release 4.0 with Windows NT Service Pack 2 installed, or
  117.   on Windows NT release 3.51, boot records of removable media such as
  118.   diskettes are not protected by the IBM AntiVirus System Shield,
  119.   whether or not the "check diskette boot records when the diskette is
  120.   used" setting is selected.  All other functions of IBM AntiVirus for
  121.   Windows NT, such as shielding of local and network drives, manual and
  122.   automatic checking of all drives, and shutdown checking of diskette
  123.   drives, work correctly.  In particular, when "Check files when 
  124.   accessed" is enabled, infected files will be detected immediately if
  125.   they are copied from a diskette to any local or network drive.  The 
  126.   IBM AntiVirus for Windows NT install program will inform you if 
  127.   the System Shield cannot protect removable media on your system.
  128.  
  129.   To ensure that the IBM AntiVirus System Shield can protect all
  130.   removable media as well as local and network drives on Windows NT 4.0
  131.   systems, install Windows NT Service Pack 3 or later, either before or 
  132.   after installing IBM AntiVirus.  Windows NT Service Packs are 
  133.   available free of charge from Microsoft at http://www.microsoft.com 
  134.   on the Internet.  After installing Windows NT Service Pack 3 or later, 
  135.   no changes to IBM AntiVirus are needed.
  136.  
  137.   Note that if you have Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 2 and have already
  138.   installed Microsoft hot fix Q141239 by downloading KRNL40I.EXE from 
  139.   the Microsoft FTP server, the IBM AntiVirus System Shield will work
  140.   correctly and the IBM AntiVirus install program will not display a 
  141.   message about removable media.
  142.  
  143.  
  144. Installing from CD-ROM
  145. ----------------------
  146.  
  147. IBM AntiVirus Desktop Edition is distributed on a single compact disc
  148. (CD-ROM) that contains IBM AntiVirus for DOS and Windows, OS/2,
  149. Windows 95, and Windows NT.  If your system has a CD drive, you can
  150. install IBM AntiVirus on any platform from this CD-ROM using any of
  151. the following procedures.  If you need to install IBM AntiVirus on a
  152. system that does not have a CD drive, you can create installation
  153. diskettes for it on any system that does have a CD drive.  Please
  154. refer to the next section in this document for diskette procedures.
  155.  
  156. To install from CD-ROM via an icon, do this:
  157.  
  158.   1. Insert the CD-ROM into your CD drive.
  159.  
  160.   2. Open your CD drive folder and double-click on the SETUP icon (or
  161.      for OS/2, the SETUPOS2 icon).
  162.  
  163.   3. Follow the instructions in the installation dialogs.  To install
  164.      with the default settings, click the "Next" button on each dialog.
  165.  
  166. In Windows and Windows NT release 3.51, to install from CD-ROM via the
  167. Program Manager:
  168.  
  169.   1. Insert the CD-ROM into your CD drive.
  170.  
  171.   2. In Program Manager, select "Run" from the "File" menu.  Use the 
  172.      "Browse" button to select the SETUP program in the root 
  173.      directory of your CD drive and then click the "OK" button.
  174.  
  175.   3. Follow the instructions in the installation dialogs.  To install
  176.      with the default settings, click the "Next" button on each dialog.
  177.  
  178. In Windows 95 and Windows NT release 4.0, to install from CD-ROM via
  179. the Add/Remove Programs application, do this:
  180.  
  181.   1. Insert the CD-ROM into your CD drive.
  182.  
  183.   2. Launch the "Add/Remove Programs" application from the "Control Panel"
  184.      folder and click the "Install..." button.
  185.  
  186.   3. Follow the instructions in the installation dialogs.  To install
  187.      with the default settings, click the "Next" button on each dialog.
  188.  
  189. To install from CD-ROM via a command prompt, do this:
  190.  
  191.   1. Insert the CD-ROM into your CD drive.
  192.  
  193.   2. At a command prompt, type "x:\setup" (or for OS/2, "x:\setupos2"),
  194.      where "x" is the drive letter of your CD drive.
  195.  
  196.   3. Follow the instructions in the installation dialogs.  To install
  197.      with the default settings, click the "Next" button on each dialog.
  198.  
  199. If you have a previous version of IBM AntiVirus installed, then your
  200. current settings will be kept and your workstation will be upgraded to
  201. this new version.
  202.  
  203. If you do not have a previous version of IBM AntiVirus installed on
  204. your workstation, then the default installation directory will be
  205. C:\IBMAV\ for DOS and Windows and OS/2, or C:\IBMAV95\ for Windows 95,
  206. or C:\IBMAVNT\ for Windows NT.  By default, the System Shield will be
  207. loaded in DOS sessions, and automated checking will be done weekly.
  208.  
  209. The default settings used when you choose "Express" installation
  210. provide appropriate protection for most workstations, and we recommend
  211. that you accept them.  You may change any of the settings during
  212. installation by choosing "Custom" installation, or at any time
  213. afterwards by launching the IBM AntiVirus program and selecting
  214. "Setup" from the menu.  If you frequently access programs or documents
  215. via a network, you should enable the "Check files when accessed"
  216. function of the System Shield.
  217.  
  218. Some viruses affect the ability of Windows workstations to operate
  219. unless the proper anti-virus precautions are taken.  In some cases,
  220. they can make it impossible to start Windows.  For this reason, we
  221. recommend that Windows users enable the "Prevent common DOS viruses"
  222. feature of the System Shield at all times.
  223.  
  224. IBM AntiVirus for DOS and IBM AntiVirus for OS/2 can use some of the
  225. same files.  If you are using both on the same workstation, please
  226. upgrade both at the same time.
  227.  
  228.  
  229. Creating Installation Diskettes
  230. -------------------------------
  231.  
  232. If you need to install IBM AntiVirus on a system that does not have a
  233. CD drive, you can create installation diskettes for it on any system
  234. that does have a CD drive.  The IBM AntiVirus Desktop Edition CD-ROM
  235. can be used to create installation diskettes for any supported
  236. platform on any supported platform.  It can also be used to create
  237. additional Emergency Diskettes.
  238.  
  239. To create diskettes on a DOS or Windows system, do this:
  240.  
  241.   1. Insert the CD-ROM into your CD drive.
  242.  
  243.   2. At a command prompt, type one of these commands, where "x" is
  244.      the drive letter of your CD drive:
  245.  
  246.         x:\300\utility\ea\dos\diskette windows
  247.         x:\300\utility\ea\dos\diskette os2
  248.         x:\300\utility\ea\dos\diskette win95
  249.         x:\300\utility\ea\dos\diskette winnt
  250.         x:\300\utility\ea\dos\diskette emergency

  252.   3. Follow the instructions as the program prompts you to insert
  253.      and remove diskettes.  Please be sure to write-protect each 
  254.      diskette as you remove it from your diskette drive.

  256. To create diskettes on an OS/2 system, do this:
  257.  
  258.   1. Insert the CD-ROM into your CD drive.
  259.  
  260.   2. At a command prompt, type one of these commands, where "x" is
  261.      the drive letter of your CD drive:
  262.  
  263.         x:\300\utility\ea\os2\diskette windows
  264.         x:\300\utility\ea\os2\diskette os2
  265.         x:\300\utility\ea\os2\diskette win95

  269.   3. Follow the instructions as the program prompts you to insert
  270.      and remove diskettes.  Please be sure to write-protect each 
  271.      diskette as you remove it from your diskette drive.

  273. To create diskettes on a Windows 95 system, do this:
  274.  
  275.   1. Insert the CD-ROM into your CD drive.
  276.  
  277.   2. At a command prompt, type one of these commands, where "x" is
  278.      the drive letter of your CD drive:
  279.

  290. To create diskettes on a Windows NT system, do this:

  292.   1. Insert the CD-ROM into your CD drive.
  293.  
  294.   2. At a command prompt, type one of these commands, where "x" is
  295.      the drive letter of your CD drive:

  303.   3. Follow the instructions as the program prompts you to insert
  304.      and remove diskettes.  Please be sure to write-protect each 
  305.      diskette as you remove it from your diskette drive.

  307.  
  308. Installing from diskettes
  309. -------------------------
  310.  
  311. If you need to install IBM AntiVirus on a system that does not have a
  312. CD drive, create installation diskettes for your platform using one of
  313. the procedures in the preceding section of this document.  Or, obtain
  314. installation diskettes directly from IBM.  Then use one of the
  315. following procedures to install IBM AntiVirus.
  316.  
  317. To install from diskettes via an icon, do this:
  318.  
  319.   1. Insert the first installation diskette for your platform into
  320.      your A: drive.
  321.  
  322.   2. Open your A: drive folder and double-click on the SETUP icon (or
  323.      for OS/2, the SETUPOS2 icon).
  324.  
  325.   3. Follow the instructions in the installation dialogs.  To install
  326.      with the default settings, click the "Next" button on each dialog.
  327.  
  328. In Windows and Windows NT release 3.51, to install from diskettes via
  329. the Program Manager:
  330.  
  331.   1. Insert the first installation diskette for your platform into
  332.      your A: drive.
  333.  
  334.   2. In Program Manager, select "Run" from the "File" menu.  Type

  360.      with the default settings, click the "Next" button on each dialog.

  391.  
  392. Installation Troubleshooting
  393. ----------------------------
  394.  
  395. Every effort has been made to ensure that IBM AntiVirus is compatible
  396. with your workstation.  This section describes some problems that
  397. might be encountered during installation, and how you can deal with
  398. them.  Please refer to the User's Guide for troubleshooting
  399. information on IBM AntiVirus in general.
  400.  
  401. When IBM AntiVirus for DOS is being run immediately after
  402. installation, you may encounter a message like "Cannot initialize for
  403. virus checking".  The log will contain the message "Could not open
  404. input file - VERV.VDB."  This indicates that insufficient file handles
  405. were available on your workstation when installation began.  The
  406. installation program will increase the number of file handles, but
  407. this increase will only take effect when you reboot.  You should
  408. reboot and reinstall IBM AntiVirus for DOS.
  409.  
  410. Problems during install might also indicate the presence of a virus.
  411. To check for viruses, power off your workstation, insert the IBM
  412. AntiVirus Emergency Diskette, and then power on your workstation.  In
  413. most cases, the Emergency Diskette can remove active viruses which
  414. prevent the workstation's operating system from booting and running
  415. normally.  However, The Emergency Diskette is not a substitute for
  416. installing and running IBM AntiVirus on the workstation.  After using
  417. the Emergency Diskette to remove an active virus, you must install IBM
  418. AntiVirus and scan the system thoroughly to find and remove latent
  419. copies of viruses.
  420.  
  421. If you encounter the message "Out of environment space" when your DOS
  422. system is booting, just after you have installed IBM AntiVirus for
  423. DOS, you may need to increase your DOS environment space.  You can do
  424. this by increasing the numeric value after the /E parameter of the
  425. SHELL= command in your AUTOEXEC.BAT.  See your DOS documentation for
  426. more information on the SHELL= command.
  427.  
  428. The IBM AntiVirus System Shield installs itself as a resident
  429. extension in your DOS system if you request it.  Although it is rare,
  430. some other resident extensions might conflict with the System Shield.
  431. If you encounter a problem with other resident programs, and the
  432. problem goes away when you omit the System Shield, this might indicate
  433. a conflict.  In these cases, move the call to IBMAVDR (or IBMAVDS, for
  434. OS/2) further down in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file, after the calls to
  435. resident extensions with which it might conflict.
  436.  
  437.  
  438. Uninstalling IBM AntiVirus
  439. --------------------------
  440.  
  441. You can remove IBM AntiVirus from your workstation with the Uninstall
  442. program.  All files and directories associated with IBM AntiVirus will
  443. be removed from your workstation.
  444.  
  445. To uninstall IBM AntiVirus on Windows, Windows 95, Windows NT, and
  446. OS/2 workstations, double-click on the Uninstall icon in the IBM
  447. AntiVirus folder.  For DOS, enter the command UNINSTD at a DOS prompt.
  448. With Windows 95 and Windows NT release 4.0, you can also uninstall IBM
  449. AntiVirus with Add/Remove Programs in the "Control Panel" folder.
  450.  
  451.  
  452. Updating Virus Signatures
  453. -------------------------
  454.  
  455. IBM is continually collecting and analyzing new viruses, and
  456. periodically publishes new virus signature files for IBM AntiVirus on
  457. the Internet.  To ensure that your workstation is protected against
  458. newer viruses, you should periodically obtain these files and update
  459. IBM AntiVirus with them.
  460.  
  461. To update IBM AntiVirus with the latest virus signatures, do this:
  462.  
  463.   1. Launch your Internet browser and go to the IBM AntiVirus home page:
  464.  
  465.        http://www.av.ibm.com
  466.  
  467.      Go to the "Latest updates" page by clicking on "updates".
  468.  
  469.   2. Compare the name of the latest virus signatures available
  470.      from IBM with the name of the virus signatures installed
  471.      on your workstation.  To find the name of the virus
  472.      signatures currently installed on your workstation, launch 
  473.      IBM AntiVirus and open the current log by selecting 
  474.      "Current Log" from the "Log" menu.  You will find the name 
  475.      and date of the installed signatures in the "Data file id 
  476.      strings" section of the log.
  477.  
  478.   3. When your installed virus signatures need to be updated, download
  479.      the latest virus signature file from http://www.av.ibm.com and 
  480.      store it temporarily on your workstation.
  481.  
  482.   4. Launch IBM AntiVirus, select the "Update..." menu, and enter 
  483.      the full path and name of the downloaded file in the dialog.  
  484.      For example, if you downloaded AV30B.ZIP and stored it on your 
  485.      Windows 95 desktop, type:
  486.  
  487.        c:\windows\desktop\av30b.zip
  488.  
  489.  
  490. Upgrade Reminder
  491. ----------------
  492.  
  493. IBM AntiVirus will display a warning message when you should upgrade
  494. to a new version.  IBM AntiVirus may not be able to detect all viruses
  495. that are written after it has been released, even if you update it
  496. with the latest virus signature files.  Upgrading to a newer version
  497. is essential for continued protection against newer viruses.  IBM
  498. AntiVirus will continue to function normally when this message is
  499. displayed. It is just a reminder that it is time to upgrade.
  500.  
  501. By default, IBM AntiVirus begins to display the upgrade reminder
  502. message seven months after it is released.  This version of IBM
  503. AntiVirus will start displaying its upgrade reminder message on
  504. February 10, 1998.
  505.  
  506.  
  507. Emergency Diskette
  508. ------------------
  509.  
  510. IBM AntiVirus includes an Emergency Diskette.  This is a bootable
  511. diskette containing a minimal DOS release 7.0 system plus part of the
  512. IBM AntiVirus System Shield and the entire IBM AntiVirus Standalone
  513. program.  It is for use with workstations that cannot boot and run IBM
  514. AntiVirus due to a virus.  In most cases, the Emergency Diskette can
  515. remove active viruses which prevent the workstation's operating system
  516. from booting and running normally.
  517.  
  518. To use the Emergency Diskette, do this:
  519.  
  520.   1. Turn the power off on your workstation.
  521.  
  522.   2. Insert the IBM AntiVirus Emergency Diskette into the A: drive.
  523.  
  524.   3. Turn the power on again.
  525.  
  526.   4. Follow the instructions on the screen.
  527.  
  528. The Emergency Diskette is not a substitute for installing and running
  529. IBM AntiVirus on your workstation.  After using the Emergency Diskette
  530. to remove an active virus, you must install IBM AntiVirus and scan the
  531. system thoroughly to find and remove latent copies of viruses.  In
  532. particular, the Emergency Diskette cannot scan compressed partitions,
  533. OS/2 HPFS partitions, or Windows NT NTFS partitions.  You must use IBM
  534. AntiVirus to find and remove viruses in these partitions.
  535.  
  536. You can make additional Emergency Diskettes from the IBM AntiVirus
  537. Desktop Edition CD-ROM.  Please refer to the section "Creating
  538. Installation Diskettes" earlier in this document.
  539.  
  540.  
  541. For Reviewers and Testers
  542. -------------------------
  543.  
  544. IBM AntiVirus is optimized to perform best in a typical real-world
  545. incident, involving a small number of viruses in a typical number of
  546. files.  If you would like to test IBM AntiVirus to see how many

  552. For example, you may copy your virus collection to your E: drive and
  553. then type:

  555.   ibmavsp e: -allfiles -log -vlog -nrep -ywipe -scomp

  557. This will scan all files, including compressed files, erasing any
  558. files found to be infected.  A log will be created in the current
  559. working directory.  Of course, the raw number of viruses found is not
  560. alone a good measure of the quality of an anti-virus program.

  566. IBM AntiVirus for DOS requires requires an IBM PC, IBM PS/2, or 100%
  567. compatible system with an 80286 or higher processor, a minimum of
  568. 640KB of memory, and DOS version 3.3 or higher.

  570. IBM AntiVirus for Windows requires an IBM PC, IBM PS/2, or 100%
  571. compatible system with an 80386 or higher processor, and Windows 3.1
  572. or Windows 3.11 or Windows for Workgroups.

  574. IBM AntiVirus for OS/2 requires an IBM PC, IBM PS/2, or 100%
  575. compatible system, and OS/2 version 2.11 or higher.

  577. IBM AntiVirus for Windows 95 requires Windows 95 release 1.0 or
  578. higher.

  580. IBM AntiVirus for Windows NT requires Windows NT release 3.51 or 4.0.
  581. IBM AntiVirus can also be used to scan Windows NT release 3.50 systems
  582. for viruses.

  584. IBM AntiVirus requires a minimum of 5 megabytes of disk space on each
  585. workstation where it is installed, and may use up to 5 megabytes of
  586. additional space temporarily during installation.

  588. The DOS Shield may occupy up to 40 kilobytes of memory, depending
  589. upon which settings you choose.

  591. When scanning for all known viruses, DOS memory requirements are:
